11/16/2023 0 Comments Encoding specificity principle a bLocation and context can be very powerful retrieval cues, as evidenced by the encoding specificity principle. Retrieval of a memory-transferring information from the long-term to working memory-often requires a retrieval cue related to that memory. According to the encoding specificity principle, because my idea to go to my bedroom and get a notepad was encoded in my kitchen, it will also be more easily retrieved in the matching context of my kitchen. The location of the kitchen served as a retrieval cue, helping to access stored information through association. After going back to the kitchen where I encoded the initial thought, I suddenly remembered I had gone into my bedroom to get a notepad and paper to write down a grocery list. ![]() I know that I had a specific purpose, but I just could not recall it into my working memory. Retracing my steps until I arrived at the location where I encoded a memory allowed me to match the contexts of encoding and retrieval, therefore aiding my memory retrieval.Īfter walking from my kitchen to bedroom the other day, I found it difficult to retrieve the memory of why I had gone into my bedroom. The encoding specificity principle explains that we encode information along with its context, thus memory is enhanced by matching the context at encoding with the context at retrieval. Understanding the encoding specificity principle and retrieval cues has helped provide an explanation. This “trick” proved to be very effective throughout my life, though I had no frame of reference for why it occurred. Growing up, I was fascinated by this technique or “trick.” If I ever found myself with that nagging feeling that I was forgetting something, I would (physically) retrace my steps until I arrived at a location that suddenly jogged my memory. Have you ever walked into a room with a purpose in mind, only to forget that purpose upon arrival? Were you ever able to remember your purpose simply by returning to the other room where you initially had that thought? If you are like me, this has happened numerous times, and the strategy of returning to the location where you had the idea to go into the other room may have been quite effective for you too.
